The history of the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov began with the opening of a medical department at the Moscow Higher Women's Courses in 1906. The appearance of a medical department within the MVZHK, in addition to the already existing historical, philosophical and physico-mathematical departments, fundamentally changed the status of this educational institution. From that moment on, in accordance with the legislation on higher education in force at that time, the course of study at the Higher School of Economics was equated to university education.
The new Charter of the MVZHK reflected the main purpose of the courses: "providing women with higher scientific education of a university nature," and also consolidated the creation of a medical faculty, defined its tasks and subjects of study.
Sergey Alekseevich Chaplygin, the course director, recruited leading specialists and prominent scientists to teach at the Faculty of Medicine: surgeons F.A. Reina and I.P. Aleksinsky, neurologist L.S. Minor, psychiatrist N.N. Bazhenov, pathologist A.B. Fokht, forensic physician P.A. Minakov, histologist M.M. Gardner, pharmacologist D.M. Shcherbachev, ophthalmologist M.I. Averbakh, therapist E.V. Gauthier and others. Ivan Florovich Ognev, an outstanding Russian histologist, was elected Dean of the Medical Faculty at the Course Council on November 13, 1906. In 1907 He resigned his post, and the faculty was headed by Fyodor Alexandrovich Rein.Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University is a leading scientific and educational medical center providing training for doctors, pharmacists, clinical psychologists, social workers, as well as unique medical scientific personnel (specialties – medical biochemistry, medical cybernetics, medical biophysics). More than 12,000 people study at the University annually under higher professional education programs and more than 10,000 people study under additional professional education programs.
Since 2014, the University has been developing an automated system of additional professional education that combines the functions of learning management and learning process support. On behalf of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University has been providing methodological and informational support for the portal of continuing medical and pharmaceutical education since 2015, the main function of which is to organize and record the educational activity of all healthcare professionals.
The Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University is actively working with applicants. We participate in projects of the Moscow Department of Education and support specialized classes in more than 50 schools in the Moscow region, conduct classes for schoolchildren at the Center for Technological Support of Education, and our University Saturdays were recognized as the best in the competition for the best "Saturday" for 2014, 2015 and 2019. The University has preparatory courses, a school of additional education Chemical*Bio*Plus, the summer "School of a young surgeon" has been gathering more than 2 thousand participants for the second year.
